4. Óðinshani /Red-necked Phalarope (Phalaropus lobatus)

Þessi tegund brýtur reglurnar! Kvenfuglinn er litríkara en karlfuglinn. Hún verpir 3–4 eggjum og fer síðan, en karlfuglinn sér um að ala ungana. Tegundin verpir á Íslandi en flýgur síðan alla leið við strendur Suður-Ameríku. Þau snúast í litlum hringjum á tjörnum til að afla fæðu sem flýtur þá upp, eins og þau séu að æfa samhæft sund.

This species breaks the rules! The female is more colorful than the male. She lays 3 to 4 eggs, then leaves while the male stays to raise the chicks. They nest in Iceland, then migrate all the way to the Pacific coast of South America. They spin around in little circles on ponds to stir up food, like they’re doing synchronized swimming practice.
