4. Óðinshani /Red-necked Phalarope (Phalaropus lobatus)

Þessi tegund brýtur reglurnar! Kvendýrið er litríkara en karldýrið. Hún verpir 3–4 eggjum og fer síðan, en karldýrið sér um að ala ungana. Tegundin verpir á Íslandi en flytja síðan alla leið að Kyrrahafsströnd Suður-Ameríku. Þau snúast í litlum hringjum á tjörnum til að hræra upp fæðu, eins og þau séu að æfa samhæft sund.

This species breaks the rules! The female is more colorful than the male. She lays 3 to 4 eggs, then leaves while the male stays to raise the chicks. They nest in Iceland, then migrate all the way to the Pacific coast of South America. They spin around in little circles on ponds to stir up food, like they’re doing synchronized swimming practice.
