12. Himbrimi /Great Northern Diver (Gavia imer)

Himbrimi er einnig kallaður „common loon“, þó hann sé alls ekki algengur í Evrópu. Ísland er eini reglulegi varpstaður hans í Evrópu. Hann verpir 2 eggjum við kyrrlát vötn. Á veturna heldur hann til við strendur Norður-Ameríku. Karldýr og kvendýr líta eins út, með fallegar svart-hvítar fjaðrir á sumrin. Kallið hans hljómar draugalega og þess vegna er það stundum notað í hryllingsmyndum.

Also called the “common loon,” even though it is not common in Europe. Iceland is the only place outside America where it nests regularly. It lays 2 eggs near quiet lakes. In winter, it flies to the coasts of North America. The male and female look the same, with beautiful black and white feathers in summer. Its call sounds spooky, which is why people sometimes use it in scary movies.
