10. Æðarfugl / Common Eider (Somateria mollissima)

Æðarfuglar verpa í byggðum og leggja 3–6 egg í mjúkan æðardún. Karldýrið er svart-hvítt, en kvendýrið brúnt og vel falið. Á veturna safnast þeir saman í risastóra hópa á sjónum. Íslendingar elska þennan fugl, því þeir safna dúninum til hlýrrar sængur, án þess að skaða fuglana.

Common Eiders nest in colonies and lay 3 to 6 eggs in soft eiderdown. The male is black and white, while the female is brown and well camouflaged. In winter they gather in huge groups on the sea. People in Iceland love this duck because they collect its down for warm bedding, without hurting the birds.
